The William Shakespeare Ruler is made from wood and measures 30cm long (made from FSC Certified Wood). On the reverse, it shows measurements in both inches and centimetres. On the inches scale it includes units of 1/8 of an inch and on the centimetre side units of 5 millimetres.

The front of the ruler has a title and a timeline with dates and historical information. The timeline starts from 1564 when William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and ends with his death in 1616. In between, it lists all his plays from The Two Gentlemen of Verone in 1590 through to his final work The Two Kinsmen in 1614. Highlights include Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1595, Much Ado About Nothing 1598, Julius Caesar 1599, Hamlet 1600 and Macbeth in 1606.
